Battle of the Bands!

Wow! What a night. I spent an evening jamming with local high school bands at Rickman Auditorium in Arnold, Missouri and it was a blast. It was four hours of high octane adrenaline served with a side dish of rock attitude.

This shoot was a complete education in low-light photography. I did see others using their flashes, but I find in this type of venue that it is more distracting than anything. Also, you tend to loose the flavor of the evening because everything has that stark, on-camera flash look. I didn't contact the venue ahead of time to see if I could utilize multiple strobes. If I did I would have definitely used off axis lighting.

The auditorium lighting was the traditional PAR stage lighting common in most community theaters. It was a static system but it did seem to have changed later in the evening.

'The Music Man'

My family and I were invited to watch a local high school production of 'The Music Man'. It was a wonderful production that everyone enjoyed. The singing, dancing and overall spirit of the show was one that kept us captivated through out!

I had photographed the show with my Canon 1D Mark III and offered the shots to the parents since flash photography was not allowed. The Mark III excels at low light photography. I shot on manual with an aperture of f4 most of the evening with my ISO about 1250 if memory serves me correctly. I did a little post processing using Apple's Aperture program to bring out the colors and also did a little exposure correction.

I had my white balance set to tungsten and in post processing felt that the camera's setting was pleasing to my eye so I left it 'as is'.

Personal Growth

There are times that I want/need to change things up a bit but don't have a particular subject/idea. Earlier this year I was in our back yard and noticed our neighbors had an interesting plant at the end of its season. I pulled the camera out and took a few shots that I really liked. I've since found a plethora of surprising 'tidbits' in our yard I hadn't seen because I hadn't been looking. I will post those 'tidbits' later!

We need to look past what we are used to photographing, such as during a wedding, so we don't get stuck in our shooting patterns. This will help us grow as photographers and definitely give our customers a higher degree of satisfaction.

In our off time we need to continue challenging ourselves to keep our creative juices flowing and shoot 'out of our box'. My next personal challenge is to photograph some of our local emergency personnel such as police officers and firemen. I have a few ideas up my sleeve but nothing set in stone as of yet. I am not intending to photograph them in a 'studio session' way but more artistically than the normal 'head and shoulders' shot. Oh, and possibly sell a few 8x10's!

Camera used: Canon 10D with 24-105, f4 @ 1/2,000, ISO 100

Castle

This is another photography image of the Disney Castle in Orlando, Florida. It seems that you can't take a bad photograph of it. This was photographed the same night as the previous post. All in all I had taken over 100 images of the castle. I did manage to pare it down considerably by removing duplicates and camera movement. I did not have a tripod so I had to hand hold the shots. (I had brought enough gear as it was and my family was very gracious at that!)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone!

Our family had an enjoyable time last night with our friends to bring in the new year. As the midnight hour chimed, several of our neighbors shot off fireworks to celebrate. I was reminded of our family vacation at Disney World in Florida and the wonderful fireworks each night. This photograph is actually a collage I made for a page in our vacation book that I had printed.

With the digital camera era here, it seems that we often forget or fail to print our photographs. This may be due to being overwhelmed with the amount of photographs that are taken since we are no longer limited by the 12, 24 or 36 shot roll. For this vacation we decided to try Apple's book creation using iPhoto. It was a wonderful experience and the quality was exceptional.

Camera used: Canon 10D with a 24-105, f4 @ 1/10, ISO 1600
